Remarks on Park Not Used

Share

I was contacted by your reporter for an article about Save Open Space (“Environmental Group Feels Heat From Former Backers,” Aug. 16). She wanted me to speak specifically about Deerhill Park; why did we want to stop the park; why, after a history of going after the ‘big guys’ were we opposing our neighbors; how would I respond to various allegations of other interviewees regarding the use of our ‘power’ to the detriment of Oak Park?

I very patiently explained Save Open Space’s position on the Deerhill Park issue. SOS supports a redesign, not elimination, of the park. We have consulted with an architect to explore alternative sites for the ball field(s), as called for in the EIR. We believe that Rancho Simi and First Cities (the developer of the adjacent Zone III housing tract) can cooperate in the redesign with no net loss of ball fields to Oak park and keep the riparian area intact.

Believe me, your reporter tried, but I refused to comment negatively about our vocal opponents and kept my remarks to the issue.

This apparently wasn’t ‘juicy’ enough since she failed to include any of my points in her article.
