Keene Will Head Lobbying Group for Tort Reform After Resigning Senate Seat

SACRAMENTO — Sen. Barry Keene (D-Benicia), who intends to resign from the Legislature next month, has been appointed president of the business-based Assn. for California Tort Reform. The association of insurance companies, manufacturers, utilities, hospitals and some local governments lobbies for reducing the cost of litigation, especially in the area of liability.
Supported by physicians, Keene authored a controversial 1975 law that limits doctor liability and damages in medical malpractice cases. State law prohibits Keene from lobbying his former colleagues in the Legislature for at least one year.
The association said Keene, who announced his resignation Tuesday night, will take his new post Dec. 9.
