A federal judge made public court documents on a lawsuit against Magic Johnson, but deleted the name of the woman who claims he gave her the AIDS virus. News media attorneys went to court seeking to have U.S. District Judge Richard Enslen unseal the lawsuit filed against the former Laker.

The Lansing woman’s attorneys had asked that the case be kept secret, saying that it would cause the parties involved “extreme embarrassment and humiliation” and subject them to “social stigma and harassment.”

Enslen said the right of the woman and her 4-year-old daughter to privacy outweighed the public’s right to know her name.

“Undoubtedly, revealing plaintiff’s identity would cause them much humiliation and embarrassment, particularly the 4-year-old child,” Enslen said.

The suit alleges that the woman and Johnson had sex either the night of June 22, 1990, or the morning of June 23, 1990, at her Ingham County home. She asked Johnson about using a condom but he refused, the suit said.

It also claims he failed to tell her he was infected with the the human immunodeficiency virus or that he had had numerous sexual partners and had a high risk of being infected with the virus.
