EAST IS WEST

The photo essay by Leo Rubinfien (“A Map of the East,” Oct. 4) has some fascinating photos of the real Asia. Is it not strange that we in California still use the term the East or even the Far East when we actually should say the Near West ? Japan is as close to us as Germany, but who in California would go to Japan by heading eastward?
