After Jan. 31, Crown Prince Naruhito’s search for a bride will be fair game for Japanese reporters. Since February, Japanese media have refrained from reporting on his search after the agency managing the imperial family’s affairs requested a news blackout, saying coverage might scare off potential brides.

But a group of newspapers, news agencies and broadcast stations decided Thursday to extend the news blackout only until Jan. 31.

Naruhito, eldest son of Emperor Akihito and grandson of wartime Emperor Hirohito, became crown prince and heir to the throne on Hirohito’s death Jan. 7, 1989.
