For those who can’t--or don’t wish to--attend the opening of Spike Lee’s controversial film “X” this Wednesday, there is a de cidedly tamer alternative.

Michael Feinstein--the cabaret artist who has made a career of revitalizing American popular music from the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s--will play a free concert to celebrate the renovation of the Topanga Plaza in Canoga Park.

“Obviously he doesn’t play malls very often,” said a spokesman for the musician, who used to live in Canoga Park. “He’s doing this one because he is from around there.”

The 35-year-old singer-pianist is a veteran of Carnegie Hall, Broadway and performances for royalty and U.S. presidents. Having once worked as Ira Gershwin’s archivist and assistant, he has recorded seven albums that include music by George and Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern and Cole Porter.

Times reviewer Don Heckman called Feinstein “an expert at finding and interpreting great music” and a performer who can deliver “a painless seminar in the rich and colorful history of American song--delivered with the whimsical friendliness of the kid next door.”

His most recent album, a 1992 crossover to children’s music called “Pure Imagination,” offered a mix of jazz, ragtime, ballads and big-band sounds.

Although he grew up in Columbus, Ohio, Feinstein moved to the Valley with his family in 1976. In those early days, before he became famous, he performed regularly at the Jewish Home for the Aging in Reseda.

The musician got his break working small clubs and playing at Le Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood. He continues to visit the retirement home for an annual performance.

The Topanga Plaza concert, titled “Share the Feeling,” begins at 7 p.m. in the South Court near The Broadway. Thousands of holiday lights will be lit.

“He’s a good fit for the mall, for the type of shoppers the mall wants to attract,” said Linda Sonnonstine, a spokeswoman for the mall.
