UCSD Women Open Regional Play with Victory

UC San Diego rolled to a four-set victory over host La Verne in the first round of the NCAA women’s volleyball Division III regionals Friday. Amy Kranz led the Tritons to the 15-13, 3-15, 15-8, 15-7 victory with 14 kills.

University of San Diego rolled in Game 1 then was routed in the final three in a 8-15, 15-4, 15-13, 15-6 loss to Loyola Marymount at Gersten Pavilion. Jennifer Wrightson had 18 kills, Maria Rickard 15 and Nikki Wallace 10 for the Toreros (17-12, 8-5). The Lions are 17-10, 8-2.

Point Loma Nazarene College dropped its NAIA District 3 semifinal match to Cal Baptist, 15-11, 15-4, 15-9, despite being up 10-6 in the first game and 9-1 in the third. Sunday Renzema had 10 solo blocks for PLNC (20-8). Cal Baptist improved to 22-5.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

USD’s Julie McKeon scored a 6-0, 6-1 victory over SDSU’s Lisa Alipaz to reach today’s singles semifinals of the Rolex Southern California Regional Qualifying at UC Irvine. USD’s Laura Richards was defeated in the fourth round by UCLA’s Cammie Foley, 6-2, 6-4.

McKeon and Richards defeated UC Santa Barbara’s Amelia White and Kelly Spencer, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the doubles quarterfinals. SDSU’s Alipaz and Nicole Storto also advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Becky Markosian and Ljiljana Kordic of Nevada Las Vegas.

SOCCER

The University of San Diego men’s team, ranked 13th nationally, enters the NCAA tournament for the second time in school history tonight at 7 at Torero Stadium against unranked Stanford. The two teams last met in 1991 when Stanford took a 1-0 victory. The ticket window opens at 5:30.

BASEBALL

Padre minor-leaguers touring Taiwan lost, 7-6, to the Taipei Dragons at Taipei Muncipal Stadium on Friday. The Padres were held to six hits by Joe Strong, who played in the minor leagues before signing with Taipei. One of the hits was a home run by Dwayne Hosey.
