Dis-Illusioned

Only in image-conscious L.A. could Robbie Conal sell his “art” to a clientele made up of lawyers, professors, actors, agents and biker wanna-bes for upward of $30,000 and still claim to be a “guerrilla” artist (“The Original Dis-Man,” by Hunter Drohojowska, Nov. 1).
Where’s the guerrilla in being a liberal artist living in Santa Monica? He couldn’t be more safe and smug.
Are we really to believe that his work--which is seen on city-sponsored billboards, in high-priced bookstores, in movies and on “Good Morning America”--is in any way comparable to John Heartfield fleeing Hitler? Pretentiousness reaches new heights in the art world.
To me, the pigeons Conal claims are making a statement about the content of his billboard are really just a flock of art critics in dis-guise.
