Joe Nieuwendyk scored two third-period goals and goaltender Mike Vernon registered his 200th victory Saturday night as the Calgary Flames kept pace with the Kings by defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-3, at Tampa.

Calgary trailed, 3-2, entering the third period before Nieuwendyk scored the tying goal at 2:35. His game-winner was a slap shot from the top of the circle past goalie Pat Jablonski at 14:54.

The loss stopped the expansion Lightning’s four-game winning streak. But Tampa Bay (9-9-2) remained tied for first place in the Norris Division with Toronto and Detroit.

Philadelphia 4, Montreal 3--The Canadiens had their 12-game unbeaten streak ended when Kevin Dineen scored 48 seconds into overtime to give the Flyers the victory at Montreal. Dineen converted Rod Brind’Amour’s pass after the Canadiens had forced the overtime with third-period goals from Stephan Lebeau and Jean-Jacques Daigneault.

Despite the loss, Montreal remained in first place by four points over Quebec in the Adams Division.

Quebec 6, New York Rangers 3--Mats Sundin extended his scoring streak to 18 games and Scott Young had two goals and an assist, leading the Nordiques to a home victory. Sundin, who opened the scoring in the first period with his 15th goal, has at least one point in each of Quebec’s first 18 games. He is within one of tying Peter Stastny’s team record for the longest scoring streak, set in the 1983-84 season.

The Nordiques, who are unbeaten in their last four games, also got goals from Owen Nolan, Kerry Huffman and Bill Lindsay.

Toronto 4, Boston 1--Rookie Kent Manderville’s first NHL goal broke a 1-1 tie and sparked the Maple Leafs to their first victory at Boston Garden in five years. Rookie goalie Felix Potvin, starting his 10th consecutive game, stopped 26 shots. He has given up only six goals in his last five games. Glenn Anderson had two goals for Toronto.

Detroit 2, Hartford 0--Tim Cheveldae got his second shutout in as many nights, the sixth of his career, as the rejuvenated Red Wings won at Hartford.

Cheveldae, who shut out the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday, made 19 saves against the Whalers to extend his shutout streak to 137 minutes, 37 seconds since giving up a third-period goal against Tampa Bay on Wednesday. He was helped by Detroit’s strong defensive play and the Whalers’ weak offensive effort.

Paul Ysebaert scored both goals as the Whalers’ winless streak reached nine games (0-8-1).

New York Islanders 7, Buffalo 5--Steve Thomas and Benoit Hogue scored third-period power-play goals at Uniondale, N.Y., to end the Islanders’ five-game losing streak. Thomas converted Pierre Turgeon’s pass 54 seconds into the third period, breaking a 4-4 tie. Hogue got his second goal of the game at 8:27, scoring off a rebound after Scott Lachance’s shot hit a skate.

Minnesota 3, Chicago 0--Jon Casey stopped 13 third-period shots, and first-period goals by Gaeten Duchesne, Mark Tinordi and Craig Ludwig stood up for the North Stars in Bloomington, Minn. The North Stars ended a five-game home stand as they began it--with a shutout victory by Casey. Casey, who faced only four shots in each of the first two periods, earned his 11th career shutout and ended Chicago’s four-game winning streak.

New Jersey 4, Washington 3--Bobby Holik scored with 2:51 left in overtime, leading the Devils at Landover, Md. Holik scored his eighth goal from the right side of the net off a pass from Valeri Zelepukin, who had freed himself between the circles. New Jersey is 3-0 in overtime this season.

St. Louis 4, Winnipeg 2--Craig Janney scored one goal and set up another to help the Blues end a five-game winless streak. Janney’s sixth goal of the season at 6:23 of the third period clinched the victory for the Blues at St. Louis.

Vancouver 5, San Jose 2--Pavel Bure scored two goals and the Canucks held the Sharks to four shots in the third period at Daly City as Vancouver kept San Jose (3-14-1) buried in the Smythe Division cellar.
