PLACENTIA : AIDS Quilt Panels Will Be Displayed

Three panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be displayed in City Hall Tuesday through Friday to commemorate the fifth annual World AIDS Day observance on Dec. 1.

The panels are part of the nationwide quilt project that has generated about 21,000 panels in an effort to focus attention on victims of AIDS.

Longtime Placentia resident Clairee Tynes, wife of Mayor John O. Tynes, was instrumental in the panels being hung at City Hall. And their presence there is especially meaningful for the couple.

The Tynes’ son, Bill, died of AIDS in 1987 at the age of 30. His quilt square, which Clairee Tynes made, is expected to be part of the exhibit.

“I requested it, but I almost hope we don’t get it” for the display, she said. “I’m not so good at controlling my tears.”

At its meeting Tuesday, the council will also present a resolution declaring Dec. 1 to be World AIDS Day in Placentia.

Receiving the resolution on behalf of the Orange County HIV Planning Advisory Council will be Clairee Tynes and Eleanor Brown, whose son also died of AIDS, and Joseph Orellano. Each will speak about their personal experiences with the disease.
