Florida Insurance Group May Go Broke: The Florida association that pays claims to policyholders of insolvent insurance companies could run out of money by Thanksgiving, a state official said. Tom Gallagher, Florida state treasurer and insurance commissioner, said the Florida Insurance Guaranty Assn.’s ability to pay consumer claims “is rapidly diminishing” and could strand thousands of people waiting for Hurricane Andrew-related claims. The association will immediately start limiting payouts to the estimated 16,000 policyholders who hold Andrew-related claims with companies that have gone broke.
