GOP Gains Control of Nevada Senate

A count of late ballots sent in by overseas Nevadans has given Republicans control of the state Senate by a bare 11-10 margin.

Mark James won by 32 votes, with the final count giving him 20,735 to Democrat Sandi Krenzer’s 20,703 votes. Democrats control the state Assembly and the governor’s office.

James and Krenzer ran up big long-distance phone bills since the Nov. 3 election trying to woo votes from Nevadans living on foreign soil. They called Peace Corps volunteers, sailors on ships bound for Asia, soldiers at foreign bases and Nevadans helping to rebuild the oil industry in Kuwait.

The counting delay was caused by last-minute ballot reprinting and mailing just before the Nov. 3 elections, under terms of a federal court order to list minor-party candidates.
