Irvine : Russian Historian to Give Lecture

Sergey M. Plekhanov, a leading Russian historian and political scientist, will be appearing in the Irvine Marketplace on Sunday to talk about the rise and fall of communism in the former Soviet Union and forecast Russia’s future.

The public is invited to attend the meeting of the Henry David Thoreau Society at 4 p.m. in Community Room 200.

Plekhanov was born in 1946 in Moscow, where he grew up and graduated from the prestigious Moscow Institute of International Relations as a specialist on Third World problems. He is the author of 50 books and articles on American politics and society, U.S.-Soviet relations and political systems.

Plekhanov served as a member of former Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev’s team of advisers for the summit meeting with former President Ronald Reagan in 1985 and was called upon as a news consultant on Soviet affairs by the media, numerous colleges and universities and corporations.

The lecture will be free of charge.

The Henry David Thoreau Society is composed of Orange County residents who meet to discuss local, national and international issues.
