THE COMPLETE FAIRY TALES OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM translated with an introduction by Jack Zipes (Bantam: $15; 750 pp.). Zipes’ new translation of these classic stories is modern, readable and refreshingly free of anachronisms. The collection features 40 tales that have never before appeared in English, including “The Nightingale and the Blindworm,” “Hurleburlebutz” and “Princess Mouseskin.” Yuppie parents may balk at the violence in some of the stories (at the end of “Snow White,” the Wicked Queen is forced to dance herself to death in red-hot iron shoes at the heroine’s wedding), but these folk tales have entertained generations of children with no ill effects.
