EMF “Stigma” EMI * * *

The title could well refer to the conflict that the rookie band faced last year--having a No. 1 hit and trying to stay hip. But this sophomore effort proves that the irresistible “Unbelievable” was no techno-rock fluke. Rather than just try to repeat that song’s catchy magic, “Stigma’s” best songs expand on its best feature, that memorable chorus-driving riff.

With guitarist Ian Dench--the architect of the EMF sound--making himself even more the central feature, almost every song has some repeated musical lick, hook or phrase that takes a wonderfully unexpected turn--up when you think it’s headed down, minor when you think it’s going major. Or there’s some distinctive sound, like the sampled gothic voices of “It’s You That Leaves Me Dry,” that, while popping up at regular intervals, still seem a surprise each time. And the rhythm never flags, making this music for head and feet.

The lyrics aren’t as dynamic, but singer James Atkin at least feigns drama and thoughtfulness for an aura comparable to the meatier Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine and Jesus Jones. But that’s almost beside the point when the music speaks as eloquently as this. EMF plays the Roxy on Dec. 15.
