Tornadoes Rip Through Houston Area

At least a dozen tornadoes roared through Houston and other parts of southeastern Texas on Saturday, ripping roofs off buildings, knocking down trees and cutting off electricity to 80,000 residents, authorities said.

Authorities said at least a dozen people suffered injuries when tornadoes spawned by severe thunderstorms touched down in scattered areas of Houston and neighboring counties. Winds up to 50 m.p.h. were reported.

In southwest Houston, a building reportedly collapsed, touching off a natural gas explosion and fire.

One woman was taken to a hospital after a tornado ripped off the roof of a northwest Houston supermarket. At least five other people were injured by flying debris after the store’s front window shattered, authorities said.

The storm damaged a transmission station near Channelview, Tex., knocking out power to at least 80,000 customers, Houston Lighting & Power officials said.

One subdivision in west Houston suffered damage when a twister touched down and ripped roofs and even second floors from some homes.
