Baylor Coach Grant Teaff got 21 points for 21 years. He needed every one of them in his final regular-season game.

Quarterback J.J. Joe ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third Saturday as the Bears sent Teaff off with a 21-20 victory over Texas.

“I feel a lot emotions. This is a tough deal all around,” Teaff said. “But I’ll take it. I guess it takes 21 years to get 21 points.”

Baylor, 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the Southwest Conference, is still alive for a bowl berth, depending on how Rice and Texas (6-4, 4-2) fare in their final games.

“We’ve still got a good chance to get in a bowl game, so this thing might not be over yet,” Teaff said. “We’re in the running for the second-tier (Hancock) bowl in El Paso. We’ll just let the chips fall where they may.”

Texas, which has only five victories against Division I opponents, must beat No. 3 Texas A&M; on Thanksgiving to qualify for a bowl. Rice closes with Houston.

Teaff, who was 127-105-6 with Baylor, finished with 10 victories against the Longhorns. He will remain as athletic director. Offensive coordinator Chuck Reedy is expected to be one of the leading candidates to replace Teaff.

Joe scored on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter to give Baylor a 21-10 lead, but the Longhorns almost pulled it out. Peter Gardere scored on a 19-yard run, and a short field goal brought Texas to within a point.

However, Trooper Taylor tackled Phil Brown for no gain on fourth and one from the Baylor 41 with 1:51 to play. The Bears ran out the clock.
