How John Paul Jones Really Met His Maker
In her article “Getting Out of the Limelight Before the Cheers Fade” (Nov. 10), Elizabeth Mehren writes of “poor John Paul Jones going down with the ship.”
She is confusing him with some other naval hero. Jones never went down with any of his ships. He died in Paris on July 18, 1792, of jaundice, nephritis and bronchial pneumonia.
