Dave Krieg of the Kansas City Chiefs returned to the Kingdome and brought some new friends with him.

Neil Smith and Dale Carter had touchdown returns to make it tough on the Seattle Seahawks, Krieg’s former teammates, leading the Chiefs to a 24-14 victory Sunday night.

“It’s nice to come back here and see all my old friends,” the 34-year-old Krieg said. “I just wanted to come in here and execute our offense. There wasn’t much time to be distracted.”

Krieg engineered only one touchdown drive but didn’t throw an interception or add to his NFL record of 112 fumbles.

Carter ran back a punt 86 yards for a touchdown and Smith scored on a 22-yard pass interception.

By winning their third game in a row and ending a three-game losing streak on the road, the Chiefs (7-4) moved into a tie with Denver for the AFC West lead.

The Seahawks (1-10) lost their eighth game in a row, one shy of the club record set in 1980.

Krieg, signed as a free agent with Kansas City after the 1991 season, completed 11 of 15 passes for 103 yards and was sacked four times.

The Chiefs forced six turnovers, including four interceptions and a fumble recovery against Kelly Stouffer, who replaced Krieg this season.

Stouffer completed 13 of 30 passes for 164 yards.

Smith gave Kansas City a 24-7 with the second touchdown of his career in the third quarter.

The Chiefs led, 10-7, when Carter broke the game open with 3:37 left in the half.

Kansas City took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on Barry Word’s 44-yard scoring run and Nick Lowery’s 20-yard field goal.

The Seahawks scored on Stouffer’s 25-yard pass to Tommy Kane and a six-yard run by Chris Warren, who had 20 carries for 154 yards.
