Real Heroes

Miles Corwin’s article, “ ‘Heroes’ Made Films, Not War” (Nov. 11), debunking the phony patriotism of such movie idols as John Wayne and Ronald Reagan, is in fact a very fitting tribute to the veterans we honor. By putting actual facts in the place of carefully cultivated false impressions, Corwin’s incisive writing clears the field for the real heroes.

In his last sentence, Corwin suggests a reality check: “If you want to know what war is like, visit your local Veterans Administration hospital.” Another comes to mind: Read “Johnny Got His Gun” by Dalton Trumbo--one of those whose career was damaged by the Motion Picture Alliance investigation--or a wrenching story of war’s horrible aftermath. Your heart will ache every time you recall it.
