IBM Names New Executives: The computer maker named five relatively young executives as senior vice presidents, one of its top titles. The move is expected to set off a race among them for IBM’s chairmanship. Among the five is Ellen M. Hancock, who heads IBM’s computer networking business. She becomes IBM’s first female senior vice president. All five are in their late 40s. The others are: James A. Cannavino, who heads IBM’s struggling personal computer line as well as its successful computer workstation business; Robert J. LaBant, who has headed IBM’s lagging U.S. sales operation since last November and formerly ran its thriving AS-400 minicomputer business; Ned C. Lautenbach, who heads sales operations in Asia and the Pacific, and M. Bernard Puckett, who runs the firm’s big applications software business.
