HOLIDAYS : For Those ‘Home Alone’ : Organizations are sponsoring social events for the unmarried, who sometimes feel isolated during this time of year.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Ushering in the holidays without a mate can turn anyone into a Scrooge. With couples decking the halls, and smooching beneath ubiquitous mistletoe, who wouldn’t rather skip the entire month of December?

“The holiday season is when society expects everyone to be gathered around loved ones and family,” says Encino psychotherapist Rick Zuckerwise, a specialist in relationship issues. “Singles can suddenly feel tremendous pressure to be coupled. That can lead to depression.

“It helps to reach out to an extended family of co-workers, people in your church or synagogue and other organizations. And remember that being single doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you.”

The San Fernando Valley is home to numerous singles organizations that have planned holiday events, should you desire some companionship. The following list runs the gamut--from golf, business and dance groups to those for single parents and even tall singles. Non-members are invited to attend most events.

* The Big Band Bash gathers from 6 to 11 p.m. each Sunday for dancing to big-band tunes played by the Del Simmons band. The $7 cost includes dance lessons from 6 to 7 p.m. About 200 people 45 and older attend the dances, held at the Warner Center Hilton & Towers, 6360 Canoga Ave., Woodland Hills. Phone for information on a planned New Year’s party. (818) 366-1805 or (818) 788-7895.

* The Ventura Club, formed in 1965, holds dances Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. and Fridays at 9 p.m. The events feature a four-piece band specializing in swing, country-Western two-step and line dances, soft rock and some light contemporary music.

A $7 admission fee includes a light buffet and valet parking. About 200 people, most older than 35, attend the dances. Members, who pay a $10 annual fee, pay $6. Dance lessons are held Fridays from 8 to 9 p.m. 13920 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks. (818) 788-5550.

* The San Fernando Valley Tip Toppers, a group for tall singles, holds social events in the Valley every weekend. The events include dances, theme parties, potlucks, movie and dinner excursions, picnics and house parties. An annual formal dance is held in late September.

A tree-trimming party held in a Victorian mansion and a New Year’s Eve dance are being planned. Volleyball games are held every Monday night in Van Nuys. Phone for more details on the events, attended by all age groups.

“We gather because of our difference,” says publicist Mary Case. “There’s a lot of side benefits to the club--like discovering where others go to buy size 11 shoes or dresses that don’t look like mini-dresses when you try them on.”

Annual membership costs $26, which includes a monthly newsletter and event discounts. Prospective members are asked to attend three social events, one business meeting and one “paper-put-out,” during which the group’s newsletter is readied for mailing. The individual is then measured at one of four annual prospect parties.

“If they’re not tall enough, they’re still invited to our general events,” said Case, who at 5-foot-10 says she’s “a shorty” in a club that mandates women’s heights of 5-foot-10 and above and men’s at 6-foot-2 and above. (818) 782-4745.

* The JASSline lists local social events for Jewish singles. The free service, updated each Monday, is sponsored by the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles. (818) 783-6868.
