The $15-million Edwards Plaza movie complex that opponents tried to block in court and at the polls opened in La Verne with free screenings for local residents Monday and Tuesday and for regular business on Wednesday. James Edwards Sr., head of Edwards Theatres Circuit Inc., celebrated his 86th birthday by attending the Monday opening, where city officials presented him with a birthday cake and fireworks show. The 12-screen theater, built in an art moderne style, boasts nearly a mile of neon tubing and lots of marble and brass. The 2,950 seat theater is at 1950 Foothill Blvd.
