LOS ANGELES : CHP to Probe Enforcement at Railroad Crossings

Share

California Highway Patrol Commissioner Maury Hannigan said Wednesday that his agency will investigate the enforcement of school bus driver regulations after the recent disclosure of 35 incidents in which drivers failed to stop at rail crossings.

Hannigan’s actions followed a plea by Assemblyman Richard Katz (D-Sylmar) that the CHP step up its enforcement at new rail crossings, especially those near schools, beef up bus driver training and testing, and remind certified school bus drivers--and their employers--about the safety rules.

State regulations require drivers to stop between 15 and 50 feet from every crossing, whether or not warning signals are flashing. But monitors posted at various Metrolink rail crossings during the first 13 days of the 5-week-old commuter service reported 78 traffic violations, 35 of them by school bus drivers.
