Please excuse me from joining in on the media-led outcry over “Passportgate.” If the roles were reversed, and a Democratic State Department unearthed some dirt on a Republican, the media would trumpet the contents of the revelation and ignore the legality or ethics of the release of this information, let alone the searching for it.

A couple of examples that support this hypothesis are the politically motivated release of then-Gov. Ronald Reagan’s tax return, and the “leak” of Anita Hill’s confidential testimony.

The media have the right to use the volume control, mute button or squelch switch as they wish, but to assume a posture of moral outrage can be a tad hypocritical.
