THE SECRETARY GENERAL
In “GloboCop” (Nov. 1), Stanley Meisler has described well the broad array of challenges facing the new United Nations secretary general. And Meisler correctly identifies Boutros Boutros-Ghali’s groundbreaking Agenda for Peace as the blueprint for many of the U.N.’s future operations.
But the author says “a senior American diplomat” told him that the secretary general doesn’t listen to or meet with his subordinates, and that he’s only had two meetings with department heads in eight months. While it would be accurate to say that the secretary general doesn’t meet frequently with all of his top staff assembled, he does meet at length and very often with those concerned with the problem at hand. In fact, during his eight months in office he has had more than 100 such meetings with his senior staff on major issues facing the United Nations.
