NHL ROUNDUP : Blackhawks Shut Out Canadiens

Jimmy Waite stopped 31 shots, including five in the final 98 seconds, as Chicago beat Montreal, 2-0, Sunday night at Chicago for the Blackhawks’ first shutout of the Canadiens in 19 years.

Chicago’s last shutout of the Canadiens was a 5-0 victory in Montreal on Dec. 1, 1973.

Steve Larmer’s goal in the first period, his eighth in seven games and 13th of the season, helped the Blackhawks (7-0-2) stay unbeaten in their last nine home games.

N.Y. Rangers 6, Toronto 0--The Rangers were buoyed by a call-up of four minor-leaguers and a solid performance by goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck in the victory over the Maple Leafs at New York.

Vanbiesbrouck made 40 saves as the Rangers shut out the Maple Leafs for the first time since March 14, 1971.

Steven King, playing in his first NHL game, scored a goal for the Rangers. Alexei Kovalev, another new addition, had a goal and an assist as the Rangers dominated the NHL’s top defensive team.

Boston 7, Philadelphia 1--Adam Oates scored two goals and had two assists as the Bruins ended the Flyers’ Spectrum unbeaten streak at seven games.

New Jersey 7, Buffalo 3--Valeri Zelepukin and Alexander Semak each had a goal and two assists as the Devils scored five goals during the second period and downed the Sabres at Buffalo, N.Y.
