A San Diego man was killed Sunday night when his car overturned on the Interstate 5 median, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
The accident occurred just east of La Jolla Village Square at 8:20 p.m., officials said.
Witnesses said Simon Cordova, 36, was northbound when his car swerved across the freeway onto the shoulder, hitting a guardrail. The car then swerved back across the freeway and hit a car driven by Gregory Horne, 36, of Encinitas, CHP Officer Mark Gregg said. Horne was not injured.
The Cordova’s car overturned in the center median, Gregg said, throwing Cordova partway out of his car. He died after the car rolled over and crushed him, Gregg said.
The freeway was dry and seven empty beer cans were found in the crash area, officers said, adding that toxicology reports from the coroners office will determine Cordova’s blood-alcohol level.
