A county transportation panel is considering applying for $229,000 in state grants to plant trees and shrubs along a stretch of Metrolink rail tracks through Sun Valley, Pacoima, Sylmar and the city of San Fernando, according to a county transportation report.

The Finance and Programming Committee of the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission will decide Wednesday whether to apply for a grant from the state’s Environmental Enhancement and Mitigation Program.

The Southern California Regional Rail Authority, a coalition representing several counties involved in operating the Metrolink commuter rail service, will provide $67,000 in matching funds for the landscaping project.

Called the Northeast San Fernando Valley Greenway project, it would involve planting 1,700 trees and shrubs along 8.6 miles of the Metrolink’s Santa Clarita line, according to a report by the transportation commission staff.

Several groups, including the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, would provide tree planting services and short-term maintenance for the project. If approved, plans call for the greenway to be completed by September, 1994.
