Panel Opens Hearings on Workplace ‘Glass Ceilings’: A national commission began taking testimony in Kansas City, Kan., on how the “glass ceiling” has limited management roles of women and minorities in business. Chaired by U.S. Labor Secretary Lynn Martin, the 21-member Glass Ceiling Commission is charged with identifying barriers to job advancement and recommending ways to remove them. “We’re not trying to establish quotas,” Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) said at the hearing. “We’re trying to persuade particularly the corporate sector that they’re missing good opportunities.” The commission is to conclude its work late next year or in early 1994 with a report and recommendations.
