A sheriff’s deputy shot a man Wednesday while searching a house in Jamul that was suspected was being used to distribute methamphetamine.
Sheriff’s officials said Gary Edwards, 42, was shot by an unidentified deputy when he allegedly pointed a pistol at officers.
Edwards was taken by Life Flight helicopter to UCSD Medical Center, where hospital officials said he was in fair condition with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
According to a sheriff’s version of the incident, several deputies descended on a home at 14156 Proctor Valley Road with a search warrant about 8 a.m.
A sheriff’s SWAT team was called to assist the deputies delivering the search warrant. When SWAT team members entered the house, they found Edwards hiding inside a locked master bedroom, sheriff’s officials said.
Two deputies broke into the bedroom and saw Edwards allegedly pointing a handgun at them, said a sheriff’s report. One of the deputies fired an undetermined number of shots from his department-issued handgun, wounding Edwards in the shoulder.
Officials said the drug investigation was temporarily halted pending a departmental investigation of the shooting.
