CAMARILLO : Pregnant Woman Loses Fetus in Crash
An Oxnard woman in her eighth month of pregnancy was critically injured Wednesday in an early-morning automobile accident near Camarillo that cost the life of her unborn child, authorities said.
Maria Gonzalez, 30, remained in critical condition late Wednesday at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, said a supervising nurse. She suffered a head injury and facial cuts in the accident, which occurred just before 7 a.m. on Lewis Road near Cawelti Road, said a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman.
The accident happened as John Wheeler, 32, of Camarillo drove south on Lewis Road near Camarillo State Hospital, she said. As Wheeler approached Cawelti Road, Gonzales attempted to turn left in front of him, but Wheeler’s vehicle struck her car almost head-on, the spokeswoman said.
Wheeler was taken to Pleasant Valley Hospital complaining of pain to his chest, she said. Gonzalez remained in the intensive care unit at St. John’s late Wednesday, said the supervising nurse.
