SEOUL : Military Out

South Korean voters, closing the door on decades of dictatorial rule, head to the polls Friday in the first presidential election in more than 30 years without a military candidate.

The two leading contenders to succeed President Roh Tae Woo are Democratic Party President Kim Dae Jung, a longtime dissident leader, and former opposition leader Kim Young Sam, who joined the majority Democratic Liberals in a merger of three parties in 1990.

Former Hyundai Chairman Chung-Ju Yung is also running as the United People’s Party candidate. Hyundai’s alleged illegal financing of Chung’s campaign has emerged as the most fractious issue in the campaign.
