PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Rumors Flood Giants’ Practice

From Wire Reports

Rumors circulated around practice that Coach Ray Handley had agreed to resign at the end of the season, but John Mara, New York Giant vice president, denied the story, adding no decision on Handley will be made until after the end of the season.

The Handley rumors were joined by those of Bill Parcells’ coming back as coach to the team he led to two Super Bowl championships. The word is co-owner Robert Tisch wants Parcells back and that Parcells would be willing, but the other co-owner, Wellington Mara, is lukewarm to the idea.

If Tisch can sway Mara, the request probably would bring back Parcells, who was scheduled to broadcast Saturday’s Kansas City Chief-Giant game but begged off.

Third-string Seattle Seahawk quarterback Rusty Hilger, a former Raider starter, has retired with two games left in the season.

Hilger, 30, who has not played a down this year, cited aching knees and business interests that need attention as his main reasons for leaving.

The Cincinnati Bengals put offensive tackle Anthony Munoz on their practice squad, the first step toward activating him for their game Sunday against New England.

Buffalo’s four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, Andre Reed, who caught a season-low one pass last week against Denver, said he’s angry he’s not getting the ball more.

“This is not trying to start any controversies or anything. It’s just that, hey, it’s happening, and I don’t like it,” Reed said. “If that’s the case, hey, I’ll go somewhere else and play.”

After catching 38 passes for 507 yards in the Bills’ first six games this season, Reed has 20 receptions and 254 yards in their last eight games.
