Nation IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : Packwood’s Motives Doubted, Poll Finds

An overwhelming majority of voters, including those in his home state, say Sen. Bob Packwood (R-Ore.) was trying to save his political career rather than expressing genuine remorse when he apologized for making unwanted sexual advances toward women, according to surveys by the Washington Post and ABC News. Large majorities in a national survey and a poll of Oregon residents said Packwood should be punished by the Senate for actions toward women that he publicly acknowledged last week were “just plain wrong.”
