Hankinson, Richard Head From Gulls to Fort Wayne

The Fort Wayne Komets raided the Gulls’ roster Thursday, getting winger Peter Hankinson via trade and defender Jean-Marc Richard through a more circuitous route.

In return the Gulls got nothing.

Hankinson was given to Fort Wayne for “future considerations,” and Richard was recalled by the NHL New York Rangers, who immediately assigned him to the Komets. Both the Gulls and Komets have no NHL affiliation.

The departures leave 19 players on the Gulls’ roster. The club has until Jan. 5 to exercise its option in the Hankinson trade.

“We felt that both of these players were expendable,” said General Manager Don Waddell. “These two moves free up a couple roster spots which we will use to fill the needs of our hockey club.”

Hankinson accumulated seven goals and seven assists in 25 games for the Gulls, and Richard, hobbled by a knee injury as the season began, had a goal in six games.

The Western Division-leading Gulls (24-1-4) play host to second-place Salt Lake (16-13-1) tonight (7:05) and Saturday.
