This Was Not First Tale of the ‘Catchers’

In his Nov. 25 review of “Stella,” by Peter Wyden, Jonathan Kirsch states, “Wyden’s account of the Gestapo’s secret unit of “catchers”--code named “Jewish Scouting Service”--is a previously untold chapter of the Holocaust.”

With all due respect, I must demur.

Beginning on the left inside flap of the cover of “The Last Jews in Berlin” by Leonard Gross (Simon & Schuster, copyright 1982) and repeatedly thereafter in the text of Gross’s heart-rending account of the hardships that little group had to endure to survive the Third Reich, detailed reference is made to the “catchers” (including Stella Goldschlag) and the reign of terror they conducted against their fellow Jews to save their own skins.
