Gorman Is Back, Wants to Keep Davis Cup Team Intact for ’93

If Tom Gorman has his way, the U.S. team that won the Davis Cup two weeks ago against Switzerland will not change in 1993.

Gorman, reappointed earlier this week as captain, said he wants the foursome of Andre Agassi, Jim Courier, Pete Sampras and John McEnroe to remain intact as the U.S. team, which opens defense of its title in March on grass against Australia in Melbourne.

“Our theme for ’92 was to get the Cup back,” Gorman said. “The theme for ’93 is to repeat. To do that, I’d like the team that played together in ’92 stay together in ’93.”

Until this week, it wasn’t certain that Gorman would be back for an eighth year as captain. Although his teams have reached the final three consecutive times and won it twice, Gorman’s tenure as Davis Cup captain was in doubt until the incoming officers of the United States Tennis Assn. reached a decision.

At the same time, there was a movement among the Davis Cup players supporting McEnroe as captain, which Gorman said he understood.

“I think a lot of it came out because there were uncertain about whether I would be reappointed,” Gorman said.

Gorman, who agreed to a one-year contact, said he is accustomed to the tenuousness of his position.

“That’s the way it is, so you deal with it,” he said. “I was going to let the record speak for itself.”

Gorman’s 17 victories as captain are a U.S. Davis Cup record. If the United States defeats Australia, it will play the winner of Italy-Brazil in the second round in late July.
