Two Christmas carolers remained hospitalized Sunday after they were struck by a car as they crossed a street in Santa Monica, police said.

The most severely injured of the two, Eunice Fryer, 72, of Santa Monica, was listed in critical condition at UCLA Medical Center. Marilyn Brooks, 49, also of Santa Monica, was in satisfactory condition at the same hospital.

A third caroler, Margie Ann Nicola, was treated at St. Johns Hospital and released.

The incident occurred about 7:30 p.m. Saturday at 4th Street and Idaho Avenue, Santa Monica Police Sgt. Harry Kutzbach said. The women were with a group of carolers who were singing holiday songs for residents on the city’s north side, he said.

Kutzbach had no details of the incident but said the driver of the vehicle was released after he voluntarily took and passed a sobriety test. He was not charged with any crime.
