SUN VALLEY : Pet Shelter Issues Urgent Food Appeal

Share

Mary Lou Rossignol’s love for animals has put her in the doghouse.

Rossignol, a 56-year-old sometime waitress who runs the nonprofit Pet Sanctuary for dogs and cats that would otherwise be destroyed, said Monday that she is running out of money to keep her precious pets fed and sheltered.

Some 240 dogs and cats crowd the Sun Valley shelter where Rossignol also lives. Just keeping them fed costs about $250 a week--money Rossignol says she doesn’t have and can’t count on getting from her few paying boarders. Recently, people have begun leaving kittens in her mailbox or puppies tied to her gate. Now she is seeking donations of pet food.

“She has reached a point where she needs help or she cannot go on,” said Mildred Traeger, Rossignol’s friend and fellow animal lover.
