The Voice of America, an arm of the U.S. Information Agency, said Wednesday that it will begin Somali-language broadcasts next Monday.

A 15-minute program will be on the air seven days a week starting at 5:45 a.m. Somali time.

“Each program will concentrate on providing the Somali people with news and information that is accurate and fair,” VOA Director Chase Untermeyer said in a statement.

The new service will bring to 49 the number of languages, including English, in which the Voice of America broadcasts, Beth Knisley, a spokeswoman, said.

She said the broadcasts are made possible through a worldwide network of transmitters and satellite links.
