History isn’t on Washington’s side in the Rose Bowl, but at least the Huskies have a chance to do something original.

If Washington beats Michigan, the Huskies can become the first team to win three consecutive Rose Bowl games.

And how hard is that? Consider that in 79 years, only five other teams have even appeared in at least three consecutive Rose Bowl games.

The Huskies have dominated the Pacific 10 Conference recently. They are 31-4 in the last three years and 37-5 in their last 42 Pac-10 games.

Coach Don James is the fourth coach to get his teams into six or more Rose Bowl games. The others are Bo Schembechler of Michigan, who coached in 10 Rose Bowl games, and Woody Hayes of Ohio State and John McKay of USC, who coached in eight.

Running back Napoleon Kaufman is the first sophomore in Washington history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.

Kaufman, who finished with 1,045 yards and averaged 6.5 yards per carry, rushed for 208 yards against California. It was the highest rushing total by a Washington running back since complete lists were kept in 1968. Hugh McElhenney set the school record in 1950 with 296 yards against Washington State.
