Area Team to Play in Soccer Exhibition

The Manhattan Beach-based Ajax women’s soccer team, the U.S. amateur champion, will play the Alberta, Canada, select team at 6 p.m. Tuesday in an exhibition at the Santa Ana Bowl.

The women’s game will precede an 8 p.m. men’s game between the national teams of Mexico and Costa Rica.

Ajax, which won the U.S. national championship in July, is led by Carin Jennings-Gabarra and Joy Biefeld-Fawcett. Both were members of the U.S. national team that won the first women’s World Cup tournament in China in 1991. Jennings-Gabarra, a former Palos Verdes High player, was named most valuable player of the World Cup.

Ajax has nine college All-Americans on its roster.

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team, off to its best start in school history, will play at UCLA on Saturday.

Sheri Brown scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds Wednesday night as the Lions improved to 7-2 with a 66-53 victory over Buffalo.

Although Loyola ranks last in the West Coast Conference in scoring (60.7), it is first in defense (54.6). The Lions are out-rebounding opponents, 54.6 to 46.8.

The game against UCLA (3-4) will be telecast by Prime Ticket starting at 5 p.m.

The Harbor College baseball camp will be Jan. 9-10 at Harbor. The instructional camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. The entry fee is $60 and can be paid on the first day of camp.

The Inglewood Recreation and Community Services Department is sponsoring a basketball league for boys and girls ages 6 to 15 who are residents of Inglewood or attend Inglewood schools.

Registration starts Monday and continues through Jan. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Darby Park, Centinela Park and Rogers Park. On Saturdays, registration will be conducted only at Darby and Rogers parks. The fee is $20 for residents and $24 for non-residents.

All practices and games will be held at Darby and Rogers parks. Practices will be conducted once a week from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Games will be played on Saturdays.
