Mergers Up Slightly in Final Quarter: Merger activity increased in the final quarter of 1992, although the dollar volume of deals declined 10% for the year, Securities Data Corp. said. The company said there were 1,377 deals valued at a combined $36.9 billion in the fourth quarter--the highest level in more than a year and an increase over the previous quarter, which reported 1,355 deals valued at $28.4 billion. For the year, volume totaled $123.9 billion for 5,353 deals. That compares to 5,128 deals totaling $137.3 billion for 1991.
