A man was killed Friday when he and another man stumbled into traffic near Van Nuys Airport, Los Angeles police said.

The 26-year-old Van Nuys man, whose name was withheld until his relatives could be notified, and Julio Oliva, 38, of Van Nuys were walking east on Sherman Way through a tunnel under the airport runway, Officer Matt Brose said.

According to witnesses, the men stumbled from the sidewalk and fell into the street between Hayvenhurst and Valjean avenues about 2:45 p.m., Brose said. Both men got up, but then the man who was later killed fell down again and Oliva fell on top of him.

The men were then hit by a car traveling east on Sherman Way, Brose said. Oliva landed on the sidewalk and was hospitalized with a broken leg and a cut elbow, Brose said.

The other man landed about 150 feet away and was pronounced dead at the scene, Brose said.

The driver of the car had a minor cut. Brose said the driver was not cited or held. He added that it was unknown what caused the men to fall into the roadway.
