2 Sides on the Mini-City

Let us give thanks to our public leaders this holiday season--to the supervisors in Ventura County who had the good sense to approve the Ahmanson Ranch project.

At first glance, it may seem difficult to justify the approval of another large development in a place where everyone wants to limit growth or halt it altogether. But this is no ordinary project, and it is well worth a second look.

The Ahmanson project should be a model for every major proposal that follows it, and thank goodness the supervisors could see this.

We must be realistic. How do we create sustainable, livable communities? How do we balance the need for various economic levels of housing? How do we keep some land protected so that not everything gets developed? These are the real issues. That’s what makes the Ahmanson project valuable. It addresses these issues.

We should feel fortunate that the Ventura County supervisors had the strength and the conviction to make a decision that looks to the long term.
