* Constance Carpenter; Starred in ‘The King and I’

Constance Carpenter, 87, Broadway actress who starred opposite the late Yul Brynner in “The King and I.” A native of Bath, England, she made her Broadway debut in 1924 as a dancer in “Charlot’s Revue.” She was also cast in “A Connecticut Yankee.” During World War II, Miss Carpenter entertained U.S. troops in Europe and Asia. She was understudy to Gertrude Lawrence when “The King and I” opened on Broadway in 1951, and took over the role of Anna when Miss Lawrence died in 1952. Miss Carpenter starred opposite Brynner for 621 performances. On Dec. 26 in New York of a stroke.
