Countywide : 25 Drunk Driving Arrests Are Made

Twenty-five arrests for drunk driving were made on Ventura County roads during the New Year’s Eve weekend, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.

CHP spokeswoman Staci Morse said authorities are pleased with the low number of arrests during a maximum enforcement period that began at 6 p.m. Thursday and ended at midnight Sunday. Morse credited public awareness campaigns about the dangers of drinking and driving with helping to keep arrests low.

“It seems people are starting to catch on as far as having a designated driver instead of getting behind the wheel when they are intoxicated,” Morse said.

There were 14 arrests for driving under the influence during the 1991 New Year’s holiday, but that period lasted only a day and a half, Morse said. The 1992 holiday period was 78 hours.

This year, there were 10 traffic accidents, four of them alcohol- or drug-related, she said. No one died in the collisions.
