Port Hueneme police arrested a jail inmate Monday in the slaying of 33-year-old roofer Ramiro Mendoza, and issued a warrant for the arrest of another suspect in the Nov. 27 shooting.

Sabino Ortega, 23, of Oxnard was arrested in Ventura County Jail, where he was being held on unrelated charges, authorities said. Ortega remained in the jail Monday night on $250,000 bond.

Detectives are still seeking Simon Trujillo, 24, of Oxnard in connection with the slaying. A warrant for his arrest on suspicion of murder has been issued, authorities said.

Two other suspects were previously arrested in Mendoza’s slaying, which police say was drug-related. Police arrested Celestine Camacho and Juan Rojelio, both 18, on Dec. 15. A jail spokesman said neither man remained in custody Monday.

Mendoza’s body was found his ex-girlfriend, who went to check on him after friends said he was not answering the door in his ground-floor apartment in the 800 block of Jane Drive.
