Mary L. Crary; Luminaires Founder Was Active in Numerous Charities

Mary L. Crary, founder in 1976 of the Luminaires, a support group for the Estelle Doheny Eye Foundation which has since raised millions of dollars, has died.

A spokesman for the Welch-Ryce-Halder Mortuary in Santa Barbara said she died in that city Dec. 30. She was 71 and death was attributed to cancer.

She and her husband, Gordon B. Crary Jr., former managing director of the E.F. Hutton Group Inc. in Los Angeles, had retired to Santa Barbara after years of living in Hancock Park.

While in Los Angeles she was president or member of many charitable support groups, among them Las Madrinas of Childrens Hospital. She also belonged to the Junior League, the Hancock Park Garden Club and the Harvard School Mothers Club.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, three granddaughters and three brothers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara, 300 W. Pueblo St., Santa Barbara 93105.
